A DEEPER MEANING

Sun Dec 13, 2009, 2:02 PM
This is the mojority of an amazing speech given by Kirk to Bones in in episode 20 of Season 2 "Return to Tomorrow." And for all those that think Star Trek is a show completely devoid of deeper meaning or context, read this journal.

The Enerprise and her crew have just encountered species that are significantly more advanced than us, though all that's left is their mind in the form of pure energy because of an intense cataclysm that rendered their planet life less. They are requestiong the use of Kirk's body, along with Spock's and another crewman, to build artificial bodies of their own so they can leave their barren planent after a half million years. These being are willing to give mankind all of their knowledge in order to help the continuation of the humans and the Federation. Everyone who is high enough up to be impacted by this (all the previous characters plus Montgomery "Scotty" Scott) are willing to do this, except for McCoy, who finds the whole idea of them using the Captain's and the Second-in-Command's body too risky. Now that you know the basic layout of the plot so far, here's the speech:

McCoy: “I still want one question answered to my satisfaction: Why!? Not a list of possible miracles, but a simple, basic, understandable ‘why’ that overrides all danger. Let’s not kid ourselves that there’s no potential danger in this.”

Kirk: “They used to say that if man could fly he’d have wings. But he did fly. He discovered he had to. Do you wish that the first Apollo mission hadn’t reached the moon, or that we hadn’t gone on to Mars then to the nearest star? That’s like saying you wish that you still operated with scalpels and sewed your patients up with cat gut like your great-great-great-great-grandfather used to. I’m in command; I could order this but I’m not because Doctor McCoy is right in pointing out the enormous danger potential in any contact with life and intelligence as fantastically advanced as this!! But I must point out that the possibilities, the potential, the knowledge, the advancement is equally great! Risk, risk is our business! That’s what a star ship is all about! That’s why we’re aboard her!”

On a unrelated note, the journal skins aren't being sponsered anymore so I have to go back to the boring green one.

IN THE PAST 49 HOURS...

I have...

  • bought Star Trek XI on DVD and Blu-ray Tuesday when it came out. Before you start judging me as being excessive (and I realize that, in this instance, I am a little) let me explain. I bought the B-r for the digital copy (so I can put it on my iPod), the quality (it would be a crime to watch this in anything less) and for the four Starfleet replica badges of the four divisions (Command, Engineering and Security, Science, and Medical). I bought the DVD so I can watch it upstairs on the regular DVD player when my brother is playing the PS3 (our B-r player) and so I can watch it on my portable DVD player on trips and such.

  • stayed up until 1:26 on Wednesday watching Star Trek.

  • worn one one of the previously mentioned Starfleet badges (Science) on Wednesday and kept the S&E in my pocket today.

  • donated blood on Wednesday. No drama whatsoever. No fainting, throwing up or discomfort in any way, shape or form. The needle didn't even hurt. And I got free snacks and someone read The Berenstain Bears to me. What fun!!

  • started my menstration cycle on Wednesday after donating blood. WHAT. THE. HELL. Not! Fun!

  • won a debate in French about how Twilight is the most sucktastic story/movie/franchise in existence, me being on the supporting side.

  • ENJOYED LIFE!!!
(despite the fact that the premier for New Moon, the latest installment in the Twilight series a.k.a. The Series That Bastardized Vampires Forever, is tonight)

    LEONARD NIMOY DAY

Journal Entry: Sat Nov 14, 2009, 9:48 PM
Facebook l Gallery l dA Portfolio l Watch Me l Note Me

Apparently the town of Boston (capital of Massachusetts for all you non-Americans who might not know and/or idiots) has dubbed November 14th Leonard Nimoy Day, because of some dealio of him hailling from there and something was happening on that day that involved his coming back there for something important. I don't get it but it's cool nonetheless. HAPPY BELATED LN DAY!!

    WATCH THESE!!
    Part 1: [link]
    Part 2: [link]
    Part 3: [link]

Part 3 is the one that's important, but you need to watch Part 2 in order to really get it, and Part 1 gives you the full effect. As a teaser, here's a line from P3: "You just watched Kirk and Spock become a couple."

And apparently dA is having a limited time offer where you can use any journal skin for free. They don't have a Star Trek one, but still WOOHOO!!
